Description

Contaminants of Emerging Concern in the Environment: An Analytical Framework addresses the pressing issue of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in the environment. With the need for new analytical methods to detect these contaminants at trace levels in various environmental matrices, such as air, water, and solid samples, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the analytical framework developed since 2010. By detailing sampling and sample pretreatment techniques, chromatographic separation coupled with mass spectrometry, and portable in-situ determination methods, it equips researchers and practitioners with the necessary tools to effectively analyze and monitor CECs.

This book offers practical insights through case studies of analytical procedures, enabling readers to transfer these methods to their own laboratories. It critically discusses the pros and cons of cutting-edge analytical technologies, providing a nuanced understanding of their applications and limitations.

Key features

  • Presents in-depth case studies of analytical procedures for CECs sampling, extraction, separation, and determination
  • Describes state-of-the-art and up-dated methodologies, along with a critical discussion of the pros and cons
  • Compares benefits and drawbacks of the classical and emerging methodologies to determine CECs in environmental samples

Núria Fontanals Torroja

Dr. Núria Fontanals is Senior Researcher in the Analytical and Organic Chemistry Department at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona since 2007. Since 2016, she is hired as support Research Technician. Her research career has combined the preparation of polymeric materials, most of them with mixed-mode ion-exchange features, for different extraction techniques and their evaluation and application in analytical fields using chromatographic techniques followed by mass spectrometry detection in order to enhance the sensitivity and selectivity in the determination of challenging compounds in complex samples. Thus, she shows multidisciplinary expertise in the field of material preparation, in the analytical method development and in the application to environmental samples. These analytical methods have been widely applied to the determination of contaminants from environmental samples including surface and sewage water as well as biota. In addition, she has been involved in other research lines related to food and bioanalysis.

She is leading the research line devoted to development of materials in collaboration with numerous research groups internationally placed in the preparation of sorptive materials, highlighting Prof. Peter Cormack from the Strathclyde University of Glasgow, UK, Dr. Abuzar Kabir from the Florida International University of Miami, USA; and Dr. Panagiotis Maniesotis from Queen’s University of Belfast, Belfast, UK.

Rosa Montes

Dr. Rosa Montes is currently Assistant Professor and has been Associated Researcher in the Analytical Chemistry area at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela since 2015. Her research activity has focused on 3 main lines 1) development of new methodologies for screening and monitoring of pollutants in environmental samples using chromatographic techniques coupled to mass spectrometry, 2) development of analytical methodology to determine nutrients and metabolites in biological fluids and food composition, and 3) application of wastewater analysis for epidemiological purposes (WBE) for the determination of consumption or exposure to drugs or pollutants. This activity resulted on the publication of 3 book chapters (including Sample Preparation Strategies for Analytical Determinations in the Encyclopedia of Analytical Chemistry, John Wiley & Sons) and 70 scientific articles in prestigious journals, most of them belonging to the first quartile in analytical chemistry and environmental sciences areas reaching an H‐index of 25 in Scopus (details in ORCID 0000-0002-4154-3541).

Noelia Salgueiro-Gonzalez

Dr. Noelia Salgueiro-Gonzalez is a Senior Researcher in the Environmental Health Sciences Department at the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri – IRCCS in Milan since 2019. Her research lines focus on: 1) monitoring fate and occurrence of emerging organic contaminants in the environment by developing new and green methodologies based on mass spectrometry and 2) investigating lifestyle habits (e.g. consumption of illicit drugs and other psychoactive substances), exposure to chemicals and human health conditions in communities applying Wastewater-Based Epidemiology (WBE). Her research activities resulted on 2 book chapters (one of them, New Trends in the Analysis of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds in Environmental Samples in the Encyclopedia of Analytical Chemistry, John Wiley & Sons) and 41 scientific publications in high impact factor peer-reviewed journals (Q1) in environmental sciences and analytical chemistry fields (more details in ORCID 0000-0002-4079-658X).
