Description

Nerve growth factor: From Neuron Development to Neurology, the latest release in the Molecular Mediators in Health and Disease series, offers a complete guide to nerve growth factor (NGF) across health and disease. Sections cover key properties, the latest advances, and biomedical applications of this neuropeptide. The book begins with an introduction and historical overview of the discovery of NGF before exploring its molecular characteristics. It then covers NGF in organ function, with chapters discussing the brain, immune system, blood vessels, heart, reproductive organs, teeth, and lungs. NGF pharmacology is then considered, with a focus on NGF as a therapeutic agent.

The final section of the book covers NGF across diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, diseases of the eye, chronic pain, and visceral disfunctions. Throughout the book, NGF is considered in the context of both mammalian and non-mammalian biology, making it an ideal reference for researchers working across the fields of cell biology, molecular biology, pharmacology, and other biomedical areas.

Key features

  • Explores the pathways of NGF, its receptors, and physiological functions
  • Covers NGF in disease, including neurodegenerative disease and cancer
  • Considers the therapeutic potential of NGF

Simona Capsoni

Simona Capsoni has served as Associate Professor of Physiology at University of Ferrara and Scuola Normale Superiore since 2016. Prior to this, in 2010 she joined the Bio@SNS Laboratory of Biology at Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa (Italy) as contract junior professor where she discovered that NGF and hNGFp can affect the pathophysiology of glial cells, in particular microglia. At the same time, she started the line of research on NGF signalling system in painlessness diseases. She has published numerous papers and her primary research area focuses on the therapeutic application of hNGFp.
