  • Tables of Racah Coefficients

    Mathematical Tables Series
    • 1st Edition
    • A. F. Nikiforov + 2 more
    • English
Tables of Racah Coefficients presents a compilation of tables of Racah coefficients. Racah coefficients appear and are widely used in a number of problems in quantum mechanics; in the theory of spectra of complex atoms and nuclei; in the theory of angular distributions of nuclear reactions; in the theory of angular correlations of decay particles; and many other problems where the sums of products of three or more Clebsch-Gordan coefficients occur. In compiling tables of Racah coefficients certain conditions can be imposed on the indices, which follow from the symmetry relations. Only those coefficients are given which satisfy these conditions. The present tables consist of three parts. The first part gives Racah coefficients in which the first four indices are half-integers, and the other two integers. The second gives Racah coefficients with integer indices. The third gives Racah coefficients in which the three indices, a, c, e are half-integers, and the other three are integers.
  • Elliptic Functions

    A Primer
    • 1st Edition
    • Eric Harold Neville
    • English
Elliptic Functions: A Primer defines and describes what is an elliptic function, attempts to have a more elementary approach to them, and drastically reduce the complications of its classic formulae; from which the book proceeds to a more detailed study of the subject while being reasonably complete in itself. The book squarely faces the situation and acknowledges the history of the subject through the use of twelve allied functions instead of the three Jacobian functions and includes its applications for double periodicity, lattices, multiples and sub-multiple periods, as well as many others in trigonometry. Aimed especially towards but not limited to young mathematicians and undergraduates alike, the text intends to have its readers acquainted on elliptic functions, pass on to a study in Jacobian elliptic functions, and bring a theory of the complex plane back to popularity.
  • Tables of the Principal Unitary Representations of Fedorov Groups

    The Mathematical Tables Series
    • 1st Edition
    • D. K. Faddeyev
    • English
Tables of the Principal Unitary Representations of Fedorov Groups contains tables of all the principal representations of Fedorov groups from which all irreducible unitary representations can be obtained with the help of some standard operations. The work originated at a seminar on mathematical crystallography held in 1952-1953 at the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Leningrad State University. The book is divided into two parts. The first part discusses the relation between the theory of representations and the generalized Fedorov groups in Shubnikov's sense. It shows that all unidimensional representations of Fedorov groups are basic, and hence are given in the tables. In particular, all representations defining generalized Fedorov groups are given in the tables. However, it should be noted that the same generalized Fedorov group may correspond to different representations, if the latter cross each other in certain automorphisms of the Fedorov group to be represented. The second part contains the tables of the principal unitary representations of Fedorov groups.
  • Symmetry

    Unifying Human Understanding
    • 1st Edition
    • István Hargittai
    • English
International Series in Modern Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, Volume 10: Symmetry: Unifying Human Understanding provides a tremendous scope of “symmetry”, covering subjects from fractals through court dances to crystallography and literature. This book discusses the limits of perfection, symmetry as an aesthetic factor, extension of the Neumann-Minnigerode-... principle, and symmetry of point imperfections in solids. The symmetry rules for chemical reactions, matching and symmetry of graphs, mosaic patterns of H. J. Woods, and bilateral symmetry in insects are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the crystallographic patterns, Milton's mathematical symbol of theodicy, symmetries of soap films, and gapon formalism. This volume is a good source for researchers and specialists concerned with symmetry.
  • Control Applications of Nonlinear Programming

Proceedings of the IFAC Workshop, Denver, Colorado, USA, 21 June 1979
    • 1st Edition
    • H. E. Rauch
    • English
Control Applications of Nonlinear Programming contains the proceedings of the International Federation of Automatic Control Workshop on Control Applications of Nonlinear Programming, held in Denver, Colorado, on June 21, 1979. The workshop provided a forum for discussing the application of optimal and nonlinear programming techniques to real-life control problems. The volume covers a variety of specific applications ranging from microprocessor control of automotive engines and optimal design of structures to optimal aircraft trajectories, system identification, and robotics. Comprised of 14 chapters, this book begins by describing the application of nonlinear programming to an optimum design problem coming from mechanical engineering. The reader is then introduced to a nonlinear regulator design for magnetic suspension; optimal control solution of the automotive emission-constrained minimum fuel problem; and nonlinear programming for system identification. Subsequent chapters focus on mathematical programming algorithms based on Lagrangian functions for solving optimal control problems; computer-aided design via optimization; optimal and suboptimal control of oscillating dynamical systems; and the application of nonlinear programming to the solution of optimal output-constrained regulator problems. This monograph will be of interest to mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers.

  • Developments in Operational Research

Frontiers of Operational Research and Applied Systems Analysis
    • 1st Edition
    • R. W. Eglese + 1 more
    • English
Developments in Operational Research reviews developments in operational research (OR) and includes numerical examples to illustrate techniques and applications. Topics covered include some of the most widely used OR ""techniques"", such as mathematical programming and simulation, together with the contribution of OR methodology to specific application areas, such as capital investment appraisal and purchasing. This book is comprised of seven chapters and begins with an introduction to the state of mathematical programming systems, along with the relevance of other optimization algorithms to OR and techniques for handling certain types of nonlinearity. The discussion then turns to network optimization techniques and their applications for the New Zealand Justice Department as well as for the wheat and dairy industries. The following chapters focus on computer simulation as applied in OR, with emphasis on various approaches to discrete event modeling; application of OR to industrial maintenance and replacement; financial appraisal methods, including discounting methods; and the use of Bayesian decision analysis to decision making. This text concludes by looking at the purchasing function and the limitations of classical stock control theory in practice. Models and procedures are developed to cope with real situations. Materials requirements planning, quantity discounts, price inflation, commodity purchasing decisions, and blending problems are considered. This monograph will be of interest to planners, decision makers, and others involved in operations research.
  • Artificial Intelligence in Real-Time Control

Proceedings of the IFAC Workshop, Clyne Castle, Swansea, UK, 21–23 September 1988
    • 1st Edition

    • English
Artificial Intelligence in Real-Time Control documents the proceedings of the IFAC Workshop held in Clyne Castle, Swansea, UK, 21-23 September 1988. It includes two keynote addresses that discussed architectural issues for expert systems in real-time control; the problem of representing knowledge and reasoning; and the problems encountered in obtaining such information. Other papers contained in these proceedings are representative of the major research bodies active throughout the world in the application of AI techniques in real-time control, although it was inevitable that a Europe-based conference would highlight the work of the European groups. While AI is clearly still in the process of establishing itself, it is undoubtedly a major new area of engineering endeavor. Practical experience is still relatively limited, and many of the results discussed at this event were obtained through simulation or, in a few cases, from reduced practical experience. The importance, though, lies in the fact that many countries are pouring extensive resources into the attempt to control difficult processes by using AI techniques. The wide cross section of interest was demonstrated by the fact that many diverse industries were represented at the workshop—ranging from power-systems control to telecommunications, and into the steel industry.
  • Tables of the Velocity of Sound in Sea Water

    Mathematical Tables Series
    • 1st Edition
    • L. S. Bark + 2 more
    • English
Tables of the Velocity of Sound in Sea Water contains tables of the velocity of sound in sea water computed on a "Strela-3" high-speed electronic computer and a T-5 tabulator at the Computational Center of the Academy of Sciences. Knowledge of the precise velocity of sound in sea water is of great importance when investigating sound propagations in the ocean and when solving practical problems involving the use of hydro-acoustic devices. This book demonstrates the computations made for the velocity of sound in sea water, which can be found in two ways: by direct measurement with the aid of suitable equipment, and by calculation from formula expressing the dependence of the velocity on the temperature and salinity of the water. This book will be of great value to researchers and students.
