  • Ranked Set Sampling

65 Years Improving the Accuracy in Data Gathering
    • 1st Edition
    • Carlos N. Bouza-Herrera + 1 more
    • English
Ranked Set Sampling: 65 Years Improving the Accuracy in Data Gathering is an advanced survey technique which seeks to improve the likelihood that collected sample data presents a good representation of the population and minimizes the costs associated with obtaining them. The main focus of many agricultural, ecological and environmental studies is the development of well designed, cost-effective and efficient sampling designs, giving RSS techniques a particular place in resolving the disciplinary problems of economists in application contexts, particularly experimental economics. This book seeks to place RSS at the heart of economic study designs.
  • Behavioral Intervention Research in Hospice and Palliative Care

    Building an Evidence Base
    • 1st Edition
    • George Demiris + 2 more
    • English
Behavioral Intervention Research in Hospice and Palliative Care: Building an Evidence Base sets forth research considerations and guidelines to build evidence-based interventions to improve end-of-life care. It is an in-depth introduction to implementation research and showcases how a clinical need is identified to inform an intervention. The book extensively examines the various phases of intervention research, including design, implementation, evaluation, dissemination and translation. The book focuses on methodological, ethical and practical issues. The science behind the quality of hospice and palliative care lags behind that of traditional medical practice, despite the continuous growth of palliative care interdisciplinary teams. Researching, developing and testing strategies is essential to advancing the effectiveness and value of this care.
  • Equilibrium Problems and Applications

    • 1st Edition
    • Gábor Kassay + 1 more
    • English
Equilibrium Problems and Applications develops a unified variational approach to deal with single-valued, set-valued and quasi-equilibrium problems. The authors promote original results in relationship with classical contributions to the field of equilibrium problems. The content evolved in the general setting of topological vector spaces and it lies at the interplay between pure and applied nonlinear analysis, mathematical economics, and mathematical physics. This abstract approach is based on tools from various fields, including set-valued analysis, variational and hemivariational inequalities, fixed point theory, and optimization. Applications include models from mathematical economics, Nash equilibrium of non-cooperative games, and Browder variational inclusions. The content is self-contained and the book is mainly addressed to researchers in mathematics, economics and mathematical physics as well as to graduate students in applied nonlinear analysis.
  • The Opioid System as the Interface between the Brain’s Cognitive and Motivational Systems

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 239
    • English
The Opioid System as the Brain’s Interface between Cognition and Motivation, Volume 239, focuses on the opioid system as the interface between the brain’s cognitive and motivational systems. As the opioid system is widely distributed through the brain, particularly in areas implicated in cognition (hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, claustrum, thalamus) and motivation (hypothalamus, amygdala, pontine nuclei, periaqueductal gray and medulla), this book provides chapters that address ongoing research on topics such as the Brain’s cognitive system, the Brain’s motivational system, Antidepressant prescription patterns, Antidepressant-like effects of opioid receptor modulators, the Behavioral effects of antidepressant and anxiolytic drugs, and more.
  • Dynamic Estimation and Control of Power Systems

    • 1st Edition
    • Abhinav Kumar Singh + 1 more
    • English
Dynamic estimation and control is a fast growing and widely researched field of study that lays the foundation for a new generation of technologies that can dynamically, adaptively and automatically stabilize power systems. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to research techniques for real-time estimation and control of power systems. Dynamic Estimation and Control of Power Systems coherently and concisely explains key concepts in a step by step manner, beginning with the fundamentals and building up to the latest developments of the field. Each chapter features examples to illustrate the main ideas, and effective research tools are presented for signal processing-based estimation of the dynamic states and subsequent control, both centralized and decentralized, as well as linear and nonlinear. Detailed mathematical proofs are included for readers who desire a deeper technical understanding of the methods. This book is an ideal research reference for engineers and researchers working on monitoring and stability of modern grids, as well as postgraduate students studying these topics. It serves to deliver a clear understanding of the tools needed for estimation and control, while also acting as a basis for readers to further develop new and improved approaches in their own research.
  • Investigations in Sex Estimation

An Analysis of Methods Used for Assessment
    • 1st Edition
    • Donna L. Harrison
    • English
Investigations in Sex Estimation: A Comparison of Morphological and Metrical Methods is a collective comparison of the many morphological and metric methods currently used on adult and juvenile human remains. This single comprehensive resource for sex estimation in skeletal material includes discussion on the evolution of sexual dimorphism in modern humans, how sexual dimorphism manifests itself in those bones, the growth development in juveniles and how sexual dimorphism can be measured in their bones. Data is presented which contradicts previously held postulates and some different uses of sex estimation methods are suggested, such as using the grading system to assess evolutionary change in skeletons or grouping juveniles into smaller groups by age to better estimate sex. New insights are offered for future research from the presentation of case studies on gender and a comparison of the sex differences between two African-American collections which suggests a correlation between occupation and evolutionary change. To achieve the objective, data on 294 adults from four diverse collections of known sex are obtained using a total of 67 morphological and metric methods. An additional 23 morphological and metric methods used on juveniles, aged 0 to 18, from two of the collections. The methods are specific to either the cranium, mandible, pelvis, humerus or femur. The compilation of assessment of sex provides definitive answers on which type of method, morphological or metric, is more accurate, which morphological and metric methods are the most accurate, and which bones are more reliable to estimate sex especially in the absence of a pelvis. Investigations in Sex Estimation is intended to be used in the field and the laboratory for the identification of sex in human remains and aims to provide a wealth of data for future research in sexual dimorphic studies.
  • Handbook of Behavioral Economics - Foundations and Applications 1

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 1
    • English
Handbook of Behavioral Economics: Foundations and Applications presents the concepts and tools of behavioral economics. Its authors are all economists who share a belief that the objective of behavioral economics is to enrich, rather than to destroy or replace, standard economics. They provide authoritative perspectives on the value to economic inquiry of insights gained from psychology. Specific chapters in this first volume cover reference-dependent preferences, asset markets, household finance, corporate finance, public economics, industrial organization, and structural behavioural economics. This Handbook provides authoritative summaries by experts in respective subfields regarding where behavioral economics has been; what it has so far accomplished; and its promise for the future. This taking-stock is just what Behavioral Economics needs at this stage of its so-far successful career.
