  • Ludwig's Applied Process Design for Chemical and Petrochemical Plants Incorporating Process Safety Incidents

    Volume 1A
    • 5th Edition
    • A. Kayode Coker
    • English
Ludwig’s Applied Process Design for Chemical and Petrochemical Plants Incorporating Process Safety Incidents is ever evolving starting with the first edition some 60 years ago. The volumes in this fifth edition provide improved techniques and fundamental design methodologies to guide the practicing engineer in designing process equipment and applying chemical processes to the properly detailed hardware. As indicative of the new title, process safety incidents are incorporated in many of the chapters, reviewing the root causes, and how these could be mitigated in future. Like its predecessor, this new edition continues to present updated information for achieving optimum operational and process conditions and to avoid problems caused by inadequate sizing and lack of internally detailed hardware. The volumes provide both fundamental theories where applicable and direct application of these theories to applied equations essential in the design effort. This approach in presenting design information is essential for troubleshooting process equipment and in executing system performance analysis. Volume 1A covers (chapters 1 - 6), process planning, flow-sheeting and scheduling, cost estimation and economic, physical properties of liquids and gases, fluid flow, mechanical separations. It builds upon Ernest E. Ludwig’s classic text to further enhance its use as a chemical engineering process design manual of methods and proven fundamentals. This new edition contains twelve chapters, which include new content on three-phase separation, mixing of liquids, ejectors, and mechanical vacuum systems, process safety and pressure relieving devices, metallurgy and corrosion, and optimization of chemical process/blending. The chapters in Volume 1A review pressure-relieving devices and provide case studies for process safety incidents, which are well illustrated from US Chemical Safety Hazard Investigation Board (www.csb.gov). Finally, this book contains an extensive glossary of Petroleum and Petrochemical Terminologies and Physical and Chemical Characteristics of Major Hydrocarbons

  • Introduction to Condensed Matter Chemistry

    • 1st Edition
    • Jihong Yu + 2 more
    • English
Introduction to Condensed Matter Chemistry offers a general view of chemistry from the perspective of condensed matter chemistry, analyzing and contrasting chemical reactions in a more realistic setting than traditional thinking. Readers will also find discussions on the goals and major scientific questions in condensed matter chemistry and the molecular engineering of functional condensed matter. Processes and products of chemical reactions should not be determined solely by the structure and composition of these basic species but also by the complex and possibly multilevel structured physical and chemical environment, together referred to as their condensed state.Relevant matters in condensed state should be the main bodies of chemical reactions, which is applicable not only to solids and liquids but also to gas molecules as reactions among gas molecules can take place only in the presence of catalysts in specific condensed states or after their state transition under extreme reaction conditions. This book provides new insights on the liquid state chemistry, definitions, aspects, and interactions, summarizing fundamentals of main chemical reactions from a new perspective.

    • 1st Edition
    • Kan Wu + 3 more
    • English
Distributed fiber optic strain measurements, revolutionizing subsurface monitoring and hydraulic fracture characterization, offers a resource for geophysicists, reservoir engineers, and completion engineers. This cutting-edge technology leads the way in innovation with its ability to detect rock deformation and changes in strain along optical fibers, providing exceptional spatial resolution and measurement sensitivity. Its applications are broad and impactful, ranging from monitoring subsurface carbon storage and enhancing geothermal systems to advancing unconventional reservoir development. Despite the technology's advancements, accurately interpreting data of strain measurement from the hydraulic fracturing process poses a significant challenge due to the complex conditions in the subsurface. This book presents a comprehensive approach for analyzing strain responses from both horizontal and vertical monitoring wells to quantify hydraulic fracture propagation and the evolution of fracture geometry. The development of a forward geomechanics model significantly enhance the understanding of the field data. The introduction of a groundbreaking inversion model allows for in-depth data analysis and maximizes the dataset's value. Moreover, this book applies its findings through two field studies in unconventional reservoirs, illustrating the practical application of the technology. These case studies highlight effective field data interpretation and the critical insights that can be obtained. This book aims to elucidate data interpretation and analysis of complex subsurface measurements related to hydraulic fracture propagation, providing engineers with a novel perspective on subsurface exploration.
