Mycotoxins in Foodstuffs—3 is a collection of invited lectures presented at the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry's Third International Symposium on Mycotoxins in Foodstuffs, held in Paris, France, on September 16-18, 1976. The papers explore the health hazards posed by mycotoxins found in foodstuffs, including aflatoxins and trichothecenes, as well as ways of addressing the problem. This book is comprised of 11 chapters and begins with a discussion on how to design a program for monitoring problem foods and surveying potential problem foods for a number of mycotoxins. The next chapter describes a methodology for the design and evaluation of testing programs to estimate aflatoxin concentrations in granular foodstuffs. The action taken by various countries regarding mycotoxins in foodstuffs (food and feed), under legislative provision or code of practice, is then examined. Subsequent chapters deal with the metabolism of aflatoxin and other mycotoxins in relation to their toxicity and the accumulation of residues in animal tissues; mode of action of trichothecenes; and mode of action and human health aspects of aflatoxin carcinogenesis. The human health hazards associated with mycotoxins are also considered, along with prevention, elimination, and detoxification of aflatoxins. This monograph will be a useful resource for chemists, nutritionists, food scientists, and toxicologists.

    • S. H. Jenkins
    • English
Design-Operation Interactions at Large Treatment Plants deals with the different plans and designs to improve large treatment plans, the feasibility of these plans, the problems they might entail, and the solutions for current and prospective problems these treatment plants may face. The book shows the possible new directions that treatment plants may go to through assessment, planning, and new technology, as well as the the design for the treatment plants and the many considerations to be kept in mind in designing of one. Also included is an instructional guide on the functions an importance of the different parts of the treatment plant, the specific problems and their solutions, and improvements that can be done to it. The text is recommended for engineers and planners working in treatment plants, those in charge of sanitation and urban development and improvement, government agencies who wish to evaluate and even propose plans of building a treatment plant, and environmentalists who wish to know more about the treatment plant.

Society, Schools and Progress in Canada provides insights into the way people from various cultures live and work together, thereby building a new society. The book briefly describes the history of the transformation of Canada in terms of its social, economic, and political institutions. The change from a rural and agricultural to an urban and industrial country affects the way of life. This change makes local and migrant people find security through education. After tracing the roots of the different people making up Canada, the societies and communities found in the country are explained through demographics. The author then notes that changes in attitude toward health care, physical developments, and social work naturally followed. A big part of the book deals with education, explaining the educational set-up of the country that includes denominational and military schools. Additional detail is then given to primary, elementary, secondary schools, and to colleges and universities. The training and education of elementary, secondary, vocational, and teachers are discussed. The role of technology, such as television, radio broadcasting, and computers, in education are described. Although Canadian educational facilities are considered one of the best in the world, the book looks into possible reforms covering administration, school grounds and buildings, curriculum, and educational organizations. Special topics such as religion in schools, sex education, penitentiary programs, and an increasing population are also discussed. The text makes for interesting and informative reading for educators, historians, students and teachers in education, and migrant families to Canada.
  • Carcinogenesis

    • English
Advances in Biology of Skin, Volume VII: Carcinogenesis covers proceedings of the 15th Symposium on the Biology of Skin, held at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center on April 9-11, 1965, under the auspices of the University of Oregon Medical School. This book is composed of nineteen chapters, and begins with the mechanism of tissue homeostasis in adult mammals and the kinetics of epidermal reaction to carcinogenic agents and other skin irritants. The succeeding chapters deal with the growth promoting effects of tumors on tissues, the reaction pattern distinctions between normal and neoplastic epithelium, and some biological implications of chemical carcinogenesis. Considerable chapters are devoted to various carcinogens, including hydrocarbons, viruses, androgens, and estrogens. Other chapters consider the physicochemical mechanisms of acceleration of skin carcinogenesis and experimental observations of environmental carcinogenesis. The mechanisms of skin cancer induction due to ultraviolet radiation, as well as arsenic induced tumors are examined. The concluding chapters describe some forms of skin tumors, such as adnexal tumors and basal cell epithelioma. This book will prove useful to oncologists and researchers in the field of carcinogenesis.
  • Non-Linear Theory and Fluctuations

    Plasma Electrodynamics
    • 1st Edition
    • A. I. Akhiezer + 2 more
    • English
Plasma Electrodynamics, Volume 2: Non-Linear Theory and Fluctuations deals with the theory of nonlinear waves in a collisionless plasma, including the quasilinear theory, the theory of plasma turbulence, and the theory of electromagnetic fluctuations in a plasma. Topics covered range from nonlinear high-frequency waves in a cold plasma to the theory of plasma oscillations in the quasilinear approximation. Nonlinear wave-particle interactions are also discussed, along with scattering and transformation of waves in a plasma. Comprised of six chapters, this volume begins with a study of nonlinear waves in a collisionless plasma, focusing on nonlinear high-frequency waves in a cold plasma; Langmuir waves in a non-relativistic plasma; and longitudinal, transverse, and coupled longitudinal-transve... waves in a relativistic plasma. After expounding on the quasilinear theory, which describes the effects of the first approximation in terms of the plasma wave energy, the nonlinear interaction of waves and particles is considered. The last three chapters explore the theory of electromagnetic fluctuations in a plasma; the theory of scattering processes and the transformation of waves in a plasma; and the scattering of charged particles in a plasma. The polarization energy losses when charged particles move in a plasma are calculated. This book will be of interest to physicists.

Plasma Electrodynamics, Volume 1: Linear Theory is a seven-chapter book that begins with a description of the general methods of describing plasma, particularly, kinetic and hydrodynamic methods. Chapter 2 discusses the linear theory of magneto-hydrodynamic waves. Chapter 3 describes the non-linear magneto-hydrodynamic waves, both simple waves and shock waves. Subsequent chapters explain the high-frequency oscillations in an unmagnetized plasma; oscillations of a plasma in a magnetic field; and interaction between charged particle beams and a plasma. The last chapter details the oscillations of a partially ionized plasma.

The Quintessence of Irving Langmuir is a biography on the life of Irving Langmuir. The book was created to complement the volume entitled “The Collected Works of Irving Langmuir”. This selection was created to introduce the person and his works. Special attention has been given to Langmuir’s early life and family background. The text begins with an account of the person’s child seen from the mother’s perspective. Such an account was taken from the family’s documents. These documents are in the form of letters, diaries, photograph albums, newspaper clippings, and genealogical studies. A brief history about the formation of General Electric Company is also covered. A great part of the book relates the life of Langmuir as a father and as a scientist. Among his inventions is using dry ice for cloud seeding. One of his greatest achievements is receiving a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The book is directed to the general public.

    • English
The volume covers binary amalgams of all the metals, together with those of carbon, silicon and boron, a total of 76 systems. Complete literature coverage extends through 1983. The emphasis is on accurate, evaluated solubility data, but phase diagrams have been included where they have been defined, and will aid the reader in assigning the solid-liquid equilibrium. Tha data have been critically evaluated, and are classified as 'recommended' when independent determinations agree within experimental error. The data may also be used to compute thermodynamic properties of the binary components.
