Amorphous Metals and Semiconductors contains the proceedings of an international workshop held at Coronado, California, USA on May 12-18, 1985. Organized into five parts, this book first looks into the historical perspective on semiconductors and metals. This book then explains the glass formation, magnetic glasses, and amorphous semiconductors. The mechanical and chemical properties of these materials are also given.
  • Semiconductor Statistics

International Series of Monographs on Semiconductors
    • 1st Edition
    • J. S. Blakemore
    • Heinz K. Henisch
    • English
Semiconductor Statistics presents statistics aimed at complementing existing books on the relationships between carrier densities and transport effects. The book is divided into two parts. Part I provides introductory material on the electron theory of solids, and then discusses carrier statistics for semiconductors in thermal equilibrium. Of course a solid cannot be in true thermodynamic equilibrium if any electrical current is passed; but when currents are reasonably small the distribution function is but little perturbed, and the carrier distribution for such a ""quasi-equilibrium"... condition is inappreciably different from that of thermal equilibrium itself. Thus the results of Part I are not invalidated when the properties of a semiconductor are measured using small current densities. Part II considers non-equilibrium statistics for semiconductors with appreciable excess carrier densities. The various kinds of recombination mechanism are examined, and the consequences discussed for steady state and transient situations. The subject matter of this book was deliberately restricted in scope in order to be of maximum value to scientists with an active interest in the basic properties of semiconducting materials.

    • R. S. Scorer
    • R. S. Scorer
    • English
Air Pollution describes the basic mechanisms of how air pollution is transported and diffused in the atmosphere. The book discusses topics on pollution over flat country, formula and mechanisms of dilution; high level, ground and valley inversions; thermal, mechanical, and optical effects which influence air pollution; flow which leaves a solid surface or separation; and the effects and repercussions of air pollution. Physicists, meteorologists, environmentalists, and researchers will find the book insightful.
  • Cartography Past, Present and Future

    A Festschrift for F.J. Ormeling
    • 1st Edition
    • D.W. Rhind + 1 more
    • English
Making maps dates back at least four thousand years and it is widely recognised that many maps are of great historical value and present a skilled method of summarising the real world on a sheet of paper. Less well known is the judgement involved in the selection and simplification of features, the complex transformation of space and the exacting standards which are needed in cartography. This book is primarily a tribute to Professor F.J. Ormeling, former President and Secretary/Treasurer of the ICA and gives a wide ranging review of the current status of cartography, how this status was attained and the way in which the subject is expected to evolve over the next decade. It is composed of two main sections. In the first, the present state of cartography in different countries is examined. The second section is a thematic view in which some of the major issues and developments in cartography are discussed in turn, including art and science in cartography, the character of historical cartography, the role of map making in developing countries, the impact of a possible ideal computer mapping facility and how cartography has changed in recent years. There are international contributions from authors distinguished and internationally recognised in cartography and related fields and who have had a significant input to the ICA.
  • Biochemical Lesions and Lethal Synthesis

International Series of Monographs on Pure and Applied Biology: Modern Trends in Physiological Sciences
    • 1st Edition
    • Rudolph A. Peters
    • English
International Series of Monographs on Pure and Applied Biology, Volume 18: Biochemical Lesions and Lethal Synthesis focuses on biochemical lesions. The book first discusses biochemical lesions in thiamine deficiency and arsenical substances and biochemical lesions. The text also examines biochemical lesions in mustard gas poisoning. Concerns include sulfone, sulfoxide, vesication, and cross-linking. The book also describes inhibitors of enzymes containing thiol groups and toxicity. Cell division, thiol agents, epidemic dropsy, and sanguinarine are highlighted. The text further focuses on lethal synthesis and carbon-flourine compounds. The synthesis of fluorocitric acid, effects of fluorocitrate, carbon-fluorine compounds, and biochemical lesions induced by fluorocitrate are discussed. The text further describes biochemical lesions in burns and historical points and other biochemical lesions. Muscular contraction, antimetabolites, inborn errors, and study of the biochemistry of burn sites are explained. The text is highly recommended for readers wanting to study biochemical lesions.
  • Argon

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 4
    • H. L. Clever
    • English
The users of this volume will find (1) the experimental solubility data of argon gas in liquids as reported in the scientific literature, (2) tables of smoothed mole fraction solubility data for the systems which were studied over a temperature interval, and (3) tables of either tentative or recommended solubility data when two or more laboratories reported solubility data over the same range of temperature and pressure for a system. Users have the option of using the experimental values, either directly or in their own smoothing equations, or of using the smoothed values prepared by the compilers and evaluators
  • High-Temperature Brazing in Controlled Atmospheres

The Pergamon Materials Engineering Practice Series

    • G. Sheward
    • D. W. Hopkins + 2 more
    • English
High Temperature Brazing in Controlled Atmospheres provides a discussion regarding the fundamentals, applications, and the potential of the brazing process. Comprised of eight chapters, the book covers several topics concerning the metallurgical process in brazing. Chapter 1 discusses the general bonding techniques, while Chapter 2 talks about the factors that affect the design of components to be joined by brazing and the theoretical aspects of the process that will influence design. Chapter 3 provides advices about the availability and properties of filler metals used in brazing, while Chapter 4 discusses furnaces. Chapter 5 tackles the atmospheric factors to consider in brazing, and Chapter 6 covers the brazing process itself. Chapter 7 talks about the applications of brazing in various settings, and Chapter 8 deals with quality control. The book will be of great use for technicians, designers, and engineering students or any other professionals whose work involves the brazing process.
