  • Sulphones in Organic Synthesis

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 10
    • N S. Simpkins
    • Patrick Perlmutter
    • English
Over the last twenty years the use of sulphones in organic synthesis has increased dramatically, the synthetic repertoire of sulphones having been developed to such an extent as to rival the carbonyl functionality for versatility. Not only have sulphones been employed in a great many synthetic methodologies, enabling the preparation of a vast array of functionalised products, but the sulphone group has also proved to be of enormous value in many of the most demanding and sophisticated total syntheses carried out in recent years. This book describes in detail all of the important sulphone chemistry employed in organic synthesis, ranging from the well-established sulphone-mediated methods to less familiar sulphone reactions and very recent discoveries of synthetic potential.
  • Productivity in U.S. Railroads

Proceedings of a Symposium Held at Princeton University, July 27-28, 1977
    • 1st Edition
    • Arnold D. Kerr + 1 more
    • English
Productivity in U.S. Railroads documents the proceedings of a symposium held at Princeton University on July 27-28, 1977, concerning the problem areas and rehabilitation of the railroads in U.S. to help improve productivity. This compilation is divided into four parts. The first part tackles the work rules in the railroad industry, including the types and those rules affected by government intervention. This part also discusses productivity, specifically the issues concerning the crews and the labor management. This text goes on explaining the rehabilitation of tracks and its implications for economic productivity. The last two parts discuss the utilization of equipment and the intermodal cooperation and competition. This book will benefit government officials concerned with public railroads, civil engineering students, shippers, and investment community.
  • Towards the Elimination of Racism

    Pergamon General Psychology Series
    • 1st Edition
    • Phyllis A. Katz
    • English
Towards the Elimination of Racism reviews the information gained from previous studies that tackle racist attitudes and examines the possible direction of future research that tackle racism. The main emphasis of the selection is on finding ways to change negative racial attitudes. The book first details the trends of research in racial prejudice, and then proceeds to discussing the theories of prejudice acquisition and reduction. Next, the title reviews several studies that deal with attitude and behavior change. In the last part, the text tackles the role of various institutions in addressing the problem of racism. The book will be of great use to researchers and practitioners of behavioral science and its related disciplines, such as sociology, anthropology, and philosophy.
  • Sunspot Magnetic Fields for the I.G.Y.

With Analysis and Daily Maps Prepared at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory Under the Direction of Professor A. B. Severny
    • 1st Edition
    • M. A. Ellison
    • English
Annals of the International Geophysical Year, Volume 23: Sunspot Magnetic Fields for the I.G.Y. provides geophysical data analysis and daily maps for observation of sunspot magnetic fields activity. The data and maps are prepared at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. This book specifically presents the catalogue of strengths and polarities of the magnetic fields of sunspots observed by six observatories during the IGY. These data are presented in the form of 533 daily maps containing some mean values of the field strengths measured at these observatories. The system of the catalogue is derived in two successive approximations. As the first approximation, simple means (with equal weights) are calculated from the observed field strengths of different observatories. Mount Wilson observations are reduced first for the deviation due to the blending effect. To derive the field strengths in the second approximation, the calculation of systematic errors for each observatory by estimates of deviations from the simple means (with equal weights) and the calculation of weighted factors for each observatory by evaluations of mean dispersion for this observatory are made. This book is of value to geophysicists.
  • Functioning of the Multinational Corporation

    A Global Comparative Study
    • 1st Edition
    • Anant R. Negandhi
    • English
Functioning of the Multinational Corporation: A Global Comparative Study is a collection of papers that discusses the roles played my multinational corporation in addressing societal problems. The title outlines and analyzes the issues and conflicts between multinational corporations and states. The text first covers the concept of multinational corporations. Next, the selection tackles global issues, such as economic independence, socio-cultural impact of transnational enterprises, and transfer-pricing problems. The text also deals with strategies, policy making, and organizational adaptability of multinational corporations. In the last part, the title analyzes the individuals who manage multinational corporations in terms of their backgrounds, education, training, and outlook. The book will be of great interest to sociologists, political scientists, economists, and behavioral scientists.
  • Index to Reviews, Symposia Volumes and Monographs in Organic Chemistry

    For the Period 1940-1960
    • 1st Edition
    • Norman Kharasch + 2 more
    • English
Index to Reviews, Symposia Volumes and Monographs in Organic Chemistry for the Period 1940-1960 presents a resume of published monographs, reviews, and symposia lectures in organic chemistry. The editors adopted the plan of listings by symposia volume or journal, backed up by the total subject and author indexes. In this way the user can readily locate a particular article through the author index or the subject index; or should he recall that an article appeared in a particular source, the chronological listing in that source can be scanned quickly. The Index gives a convenient overview of the accomplishments of organic chemists during this very prolific period of the growth of the field. Frequently, several articles on the same or similar subject appear, hence the historical perspective can be sensed by rapid evaluation of the reviews selected. This Index will be useful to research workers, teachers and students. It will also assist editors and authors to select specific areas which require critical review.
  • Plate Tectonics & Crustal Evolution

    • 3rd Edition
    • Kent C. Condie
    • English
This substantially revised edition includes recently published information relating to plate tectonics and continental origin. A large number of new figures have been added, and new sections included on meteorites, seismic tomography, mantle convection, accretionary terranes, mantle sources and evolution, continental growth, secular changes in Earth history, also a new chapter on exogenic Earth systems. In addition the following topics have been substantially revised: lunar origin, global gravity, origin of the core, metamorphism, plate boundaries, hotspots, tectonic settings, and magma associations. Among the new features the Tectonic Map of the World has also been updated.
  • Alkaline Earth Hydroxides in Water and Aqueous Solutions

    • 1st Edition
    • Volume 52
    • I. Lambert + 1 more
    • English
This volume contains evaluated data on the solubility of beryllium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, strontium hydroxide and barium hydroxide in water and in a number of electrolyte and nonelectrolyte solutions in water. The alkaline earth hydroxides can be divided into two groups depending on the hydration of the solid. First, the sparingly soluble anhydrous beryllium, magnesium and calcium hydroxides, whose freshly precipitated solids are poorly crystalline and show decreasing solubility with aging, and whose solubility in water decreases with increasing temperature. Second, the soluble strontium and barium hydroxide octahydrates that form crystalline precipitates which do not show changes in solubility on aging, and whose solubility in water increases with increasing temperature.
  • Comprehensive Insect Physiology, Volume 3
