  • Engineering Materials Volume 2

An Introduction to Microstructures, Processing and Design
    • 2nd Edition

    • English
Materials are evolving faster today than at any time in history. As a consequence the engineer must be more aware of materials and their potential than ever before. In comparing the properties of competing materials with precision involves an understanding of the basic properties of materials, how they are controlled by processing, formed, joined and finished and of the chain of reasoning that leads to a successful choice. This book will provide the reader with this understanding.Materi... are grouped into four classes: Metals, Ceramics, Polymers and Composites, and each are examined in turn. The chapters are arranged in groups, with a group of chapters to describe each of the four classes of materials. Each group first of all introduces the major families of materials that go to make up each materials class. The main microstructural features of the class are then outlined and the reader is shown how to process or treat them to get the structures (properties) that are wanted. Each group of chapters is illustrated by Case Studies designed to help the reader understand the basic material. This book has been written as a second level course for engineering students. It provides a concise introduction to the microstructures and processing of materials and shows how these are related to the properties required in engineering design.
  • Occupational Health Practice

    • 1st Edition
    • R. S. F. Schilling
    • English
Occupational Health Practice is a comprehensive account of the practice of protecting and improving the health of people at work, with some emphasis on the special needs of workers in developing countries. Topics covered by this book include the functions of an occupational health service; special examinations in occupational medicine; uses and methods of epidemiology; and ergonomics. The mental health of people at work, prevention of occupational disease, and ethics in occupational health practice are also discussed. This book is comprised of 22 chapters and begins by outlining national developments in occupational medicine, along with the different forms of service provided by private enterprise and the state. The factors that influence a nation or an industrial organization to pay attention to the health of people at work are also considered. The discussion then turns to the importance of health to one's work, the functions of an occupational health service, and prevention of accidents and occupational disease. Methods used in the study of groups of workers are described in sections on epidemiology, field surveys, and the collection and handling of sickness absence data. The text also looks at ergonomics, occupational hygiene, and ethics and education in occupational health. This monograph will be useful to physicians, hygienists, nurses, and safety officers working in the field of occupational health; to those whose interests encompass occupational health, but cannot attend a course; and to medical and non-medical specialists in related fields.
  • Heredity and Environment in the Functional Psychoses

    An Epidemiological–Clinical Twin Study
    • 1st Edition
    • Einar Kringlen
    • English
Heredity and Environment in the Functional Psychoses involves an epidemiological clinical study of twins carried out at the University Psychiatric Institute in Oslo. The author reviews the history and nosological aspects of psychiatry. In his study of twin genetics, the author seeks to answer the questions "What is inherited?" and "How is it inherited?" In his review of 342 pairs of twins in the Central Register of Psychosis, his study had the following aims: to obtain true concordance figures for all types of functional psychoses; to study problems pertaining to nosology; and to study a larger sample of discordant pairs in order to clarify crucial environmental factors. His findings show that concordance figures for schizophrenia are 25-38 per cent in monozygotic twins and 4-10 per cent ion dizygotic twins. He points out that the difference in such concordance rates between the two types of twins is statistically significant. The data supports the (weak) assumption of a genetic factor in the etiology of schizophrenia. Behavioral scientists, psychiatrists, child psychologists, and researchers involved in genetics will find this book helpful and informative.

Chromatographic and Electrophoretic Techniques, Volume I — Chromatography focuses on techniques, processes, reactions, and methodologies involved in chromatography. The selection first ponders on paper chromatographic apparatus and techniques; desalting and related techniques; and apparatus and techniques in thin layer chromatography. Discussions focus on chromatographic solvents, location reagents, chemical conversions occurring during electrolytic desalting, electrodialysis, and ion exchange desalting. The book also examines paper chromatography, applications of thin layer chromatography in clinical biochemistry, and dinitro-phenyl aminoacids. The publication takes a look at iodoaminoacids and related compounds, indoles and related Ehrlich reactors, and imidazoles. The book also elaborates on guanidines, purines and pyrimidines and their derivatives, sugars, ketoacids, organic and phenolic acids, and chromatographic procedures. The selection is a dependable reference for biochemists and readers interested in chromatography.
